Preacher (Season 2)

What is it? Based on the cult comic book of the same name, the hit offbeat fantasy show stars Dominic Cooper, Joe Gilgun and Ruth Negga.

Cooper is Jesse, a preacher from Texas who finds he can exercise power over people simply by commanding their actions. Gilgun plays Cassidy – an Irish vampire – and Negga is an assassin called Tulip.

Now entering its second season, trailers suggest this may be its most gruesome storyline yet.

When can I watch it? June 26

The second season of AMC’s Preacher aims to be one heck of a holy road trip.

Small-town Texas preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), given extraordinary powers from the spawn of an angel and demon living in his body, embarks on a journey to find God — currently missing from heaven — with his two best pals, ex-girlfriend Tulip (Ruth Negga) and 119-year-old Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun). And his quest is only going to get weirder.

“I don’t ever know really know how to describe what we’re creating here,” Cooper says of the show, which returns June 25 (10 ET/PT) for 13 new episodes. “I’m endlessly shocked and surprised by the characters who are walking out of trailers or scenes unfolding before my very eyes.”

Dominic Cooper is a conflicted man of God in ‘Preacher’
The first season of Preacher made its mark with violence, insane plot twists (Tom Cruise was blown up in the premiere episode) and crazy characters, from the pair of angels (Tom Brooke and Anatol Yusef) assigned to return Genesis home to the troubled disfigured boy named Arseface (Ian Colletti) who confides in Jesse and winds up in hell.

Hallelujah! Preacher is back, and in the new issue of Empire (on sale from Thursday), we visit the New Orleans set of the show’s sophomore run, chatting to cast members Dominic Cooper, Joseph Gilgun and Ruth Negga along the way, and grabbing a few early looks at the show – including the exclusive never-before seen image you see before you now.

“It feels like we’re working on a different show,” says Cooper, speaking from the set. “We’re playing the same characters, but the tone has changed dramatically.” With Season 1 ending, quite literally, with a bang, Season 2 shifts gears, introducing new characters, a deeper backstory and more black comedy, as the key trio of Jesse Custer (Cooper), Tulip O’Hare (Negga) and Cassidy (Gilgun) embark on a road trip to find God, whereabouts unknown.

“I think the tone has changed,” agrees Gilgun. “It’s had to. Initially it was a stationary show where we needed people who hadn’t read the comics to invest into these characters. Now that we are on the move, it is tonally going to feel like a change.”

For more on Preacher Season 2, pick up a copy of the new issue of Empire magazine, on sale in all good and evil newsagents from Thursday 18 May.

The Preacher star on Cassidy and Tulip’s secret, and delivering ‘a totally different show to some extent’

Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy hit the roaring road, on the search for God Almighty, as Preacher returns to AMC on Sunday, June 25th at 10/9c.

We’ve got a first look at some “powerful” new Season 2 key art for you, as well as a revealing chat with star Dominic Cooper, where he discusses this year’s crazy road-trip premise, Jesse’s continued mishandling of the Genesis power, Tulip’s secret, insane new fights scenes, and more.

Based on the popular cult comic book franchise of the same name, Preacher is an absurdly twisted and action packed thrill ride. When Jesse Custer (Cooper), a small-town preacher with a criminal past, realizes God is absent from Heaven, Jesse sets out to find Him. Along for the ride are Tulip (Ruth Negga), Jesse’s volatile true love, and Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), an 119 year old Irish vampire and Jesse’s best mate. In Season 2, the gang ends up in New Orleans, where they must dodge local gangsters, dangerous secret agents in white suits, and the Saint of Killers (Graham McTavish), an unstoppable killer cowboy from Hell.

Check out the new key art in the gallery below (look for a shadowy glimpse of the aforementioned Saint of Killers), along with more new Season 2 art, and then continue on to see what Dominic Cooper has to say about the chaos of Season 2…

IGN: Season 1 was centered in Annville but now you’ve left that behind in a very explosive way, literally. What’s it like having Jesse, Tulip, and Cassidy be on the road this season?

Dominic Cooper: It’s been odd, actually. But it’s been odd in a great way. It almost feels like we’re in a totally different show to some extent. And the landscape and the backdrop of where we are is playing a role, as it did before, just like the backdrop of Annville and the slower pace of the town were very much a part of the atmosphere of that first season. I think now things are much more hectic and ever-changing. Evolving as we visit new landscapes and areas. It’s lends itself to the madness of our inner psychology, I suppose. Which seems, at first, like a straight road complete with clarity. And the idea that Jesse is following is very specific. But that very quickly starts to deteriorate and fall apart. I think that’s been very cleverly integrated into the scripts with this idea of being on the road.
