SPOILER ALERT: This story contains details about the Preacher Season 1 finale

So it looks like God has taken a runner and the slate in Annville, Texas has been wiped clean – which is not the case for Preacher the TV series. The Dominic Cooper-led AMC show based on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s comics wrapped up its first season on Sunday night with some good news amidst all the bad news on-screen.

The Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin EP series pulled in 1.722 million total viewers with 765,000 among adults 18-49 for its “Call and Response” July 31 episode. Even with its “Finish The Song” show of July 24 in the key demo and bopping up 6% in the 25-54 demo to 686,000, Preacher saw a rise of 10% in total viewers over the week before.

While down 28% from its May 22 pilot debut, the S1 Preacher finale was actually the best the series has done in total viewers since its June 2 airing. That “The Possibilities” episode drew 1.75 million viewers.

Perhaps more significantly for the series, which has proven one of the top 10 overall cable dramas of the year, the S1 finale numbers have resulted in a 1.711 million season average in overall audience. Key demo-wise, Preacher has averaged around 803,000 and among the 25-54s, it has around 904,000 – all of which must be leaving AMC pretty happy.

In Live + 3 results, Preacher has been averaging around 3 million viewers per episode over the first nine shows of its 10-episode first season so we’ll see later this week if that stays steady too when AMC drop those numbers.

Renewed for a second season of 13-episodes in late June, Preacher is set to return in summer 2017.

AMC’s Preacher‘s first season is over and it appears as though season two will now move the story closer in line to the beginning of the comics. It seems this first season was pretty much a prequel to the source material, with the finale of season one literally clearing the story of all supporting characters so the series’ second season can focus on Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper), Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun), and Tulip’s (Ruth Negga) road trip to find God. Preacher‘s an acquired taste but for those who stuck around for the entire first season, the payoff – although a bit uneven – was huge as basically a reset button was pushed that forces the threesome to hit the road since Annville, Texas no longer exists.

Just a week prior to Preacher‘s season one finale, cast members Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, Joseph Gilgun, and Graham McTavish (‘The Cowboy’) took part in a press conference at the San Diego Comic Con to talk about their characters and the series.

Dominic Cooper on who Jesse Custer is:

Dominic Cooper: “He wants to improve a place that he cares a lot about. He’s a man desperate to change himself, to make himself a better person. He feels guilty about what he did to his father and he thinks he’s the chosen one. And he’s coming around to that idea very quickly. At first he didn’t want anything to do with it but it seems like it’s absorbing into the very fabric of who he is. He thinks he can still do good things with it. The truth is power on that scale is very dangerous. The fact that he’s not yet realized it says a lot about him. The fact that he’s capable of having this entity inhabit him and remain there, most people who it’s happened to have exploded, the fact that he can harness it means to me that he’s half evil, half good.”

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just announced that they will be bringing AMC’s “Preacher: Season One” to Blu-ray/DVD on October 4th. The show, based on the comic book series from writer Garth Ennis and artists Steve Dillon and Glenn Fabry, follows a preacher (Dominic Cooper) who embarks on a journey of discovery and revenge following a supernatural event at his church, forcing him into a world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven, Hell, and everywhere in between.

The show, developed by Sam Caitlin (“Breaking Bad”), Seth Rogen (“”This is the End”), and Evan Goldberg (“Superbad”), has been receiving amazing reviews, with critics calling it a “visually stunning adaption” and “a must-see for fans of the comic and newcomers alike.”

The man we now know as Jesse Custer has become a household name across the globe since AMC’s adaptation of the wildly popular comic book series Preacher hit small screens earlier this year, but the fame game has been a long time coming for 38-year-old Dominic Cooper.

Cooper has worked the entertainment circuit since 2001, launching on the British scene via a TV movie called The Gentleman Thief and finally landing the lead role as Preacher in the twisted Sunday night staple 15 years later. And, with another lead performance on the way opposite Harry Potter’s Tom Felton and Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) in Stratton there’s no time like the present to learn all there is to know about this lovely Londoner.

1. James Corden was once his roomie!

The pair, who starred together in The History Boys, lived the highlife in an apartment that — as Cooper explains on The Late Show — only had one two-seater sofa, one bed and one piece of cutlery: a spatula.

However, a little digging within a 2011 interview with the Telegraph shows they neglected to mention one other item present in the cozy home they shared:

“I’ve got a fantastic picture of James naked except for a football boot. Actually, he used to wake me up like that.”

Now that’s an image I didn’t need.
