Please note: this set visit report contains minor details from the Preacher comics, which in turn may turn out to be show spoilers. You’ve been warned!

Sitting in front of a church, Jackie Earle Haley takes what might be his fifteenth bite of a sandwich amid an open field of Quincannon Meat & Power workers milling about. The scene is tense. The man playing Odin Quincannon’s stare is methodical and understated as W. Earl Brown as Sheriff Hugo Root tries to reason with him. But Odin knows what he knows and he wants what he wants, and there’s no telling him otherwise.

Conversely, Reverend Jesse Custer’s real-life counterpart, Dominic Cooper, is terrified. “I’ve been scared of it,” he mentioned to me and three other journalists on Preacher‘s New Mexico set. The “it” in question being getting right what so many thought was impossible. He knows the stakes are high when it comes to Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s adaptation of beloved comic book hero(ish), Jesse Custer. Nobody involved takes that lightly. Because, as Preacher‘s Tulip posits over and over, we are who we are.

“It’s impossible to try and impersonate an idea of someone,” Cooper explained. And in many ways, he doesn’t. Cooper’s Custer is a much more interior fella compared to his Garth Ennis-created comic book inspiration. “I kept going back to the comics and thinking about who this man is … in the comics, there are so many different phases of his life and his situation that happen quite quickly, so I had to maintain this sort of dark stillness that had to center everything, in a way.”

If you’ve never strayed far from superheroes in your comic book tastes, you may not have heard of Preacher – until now. Definitely not a caped crusader story, Preacher became a cult classic after its initial run in the ’90s, in part due to its twisted humor and willingness to throw out the kind of violence and swearing that would make Captain American swoon.

The comics follow a disillusioned preacher in a small Texas town, who is suddenly struck by a bolt from Heaven and gifted with the power to make people do exactly as he tells them. It’s a blessing and a curse, and leads him on a journey to find God (and demand to know what the heck he’s been doing all this time!) alongside an alcoholic Irish vampire and a sharp-shooting Southern girl. They discover conspiracies on Heaven and Earth, meet the dregs of humanity (and some of the good guys, too), and leave a trail of bodies (and one rockstar) in their wake.

It’s black humor at its finest, and doesn’t shy away from sacrilege. However, it’s more than just a shock-jock story – at the heart of all that violence is a story of friendship, and it’s fantastic.

Now, Preacher is coming to television, courtesy of AMC (the same network to bring us The Walking Dead). Ahead of the season premiere on May 22nd, we headed down to the set in Albuquerque to chat with the cast and see how they’ll be bringing the comics to life.

A popular quasi-biblical passage from the Book of Tarantino (circa Pulp Fiction) states that “the path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.” Whether West Texas pastor Jesse Custer is righteous or not, walking in the steps of a conflicted man of God is a challenge for Preacher star Dominic Cooper.

Playing a man possessed by a powerful entity that allows him to command people and let his repressed darker side loose, Cooper figures he’d struggle mightily. “He’s truly from his heart trying to do the right thing, and that desire to right the wrongs of his past is who he is.”

“Everyone’s telling him he’s not as good as his father, he’ll never be the man his father was,” Cooper says. “It’s a barrage of abuse and he’s not very good at it, which is why, when this entity turns up and he thinks that maybe for a moment there’s a glimmer of hope and he might be the chosen one, he tries his hardest to do what he thinks is best. But unfortunately it’s not the thing he thought it was.”

Based on the twisted and popular ‘90s comic book franchise of the same name, “Preacher,” created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, is the story of Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) a conflicted Preacher in a small Texas town who is inhabited by a mysterious entity that allows him to develop a highly unconventional power. Jesse, his ex-girlfriend, Tulip (Ruth Negga), and an Irish vampire named Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) embark on a journey to, literally, find God. The Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production was developed for television by Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg (“This Is the End,” “Superbad,” “Neighbors”) and showrunner Sam Catlin (“Breaking Bad”). The series is set to premiere mid-2016.

The TV series based on cult comic book Preacher is to launch in the UK on Amazon’s Prime streaming service from Monday.

The episodes will be released by Amazon in the UK, Austria, Germany and Japan the day after they air in the US on AMC, with the pilot available from Monday and the next episode two weeks later, and then each Monday thereafter.

The Sony Pictures Television series is co-produced by avid comic book fan and Knocked Up actor Seth Rogen, and the showrunner is Breaking Bad’s Sam Catlin.

Two of the leads, Agent Carter’s Dominic Cooper and Joseph Gilgun of This is England, are from the UK. The other main character is played by Ruth Negga, who also starred in Channel 4’s offbeat superhero series Misfits with Gilgun.

The original comic series is part of DC’s adult comic book stable Vertigo. The adaptation stars Cooper as a preacher from Texas called Jesse who gains the power to command people to do whatever he tells them. He teams up with Gilgun’s Cassidy, an Irish vampire, and Negga as Tulip, Jesse’s assassin ex-girlfriend.

“Preacher is one of the most ambitious and highly anticipated new series of the year, and exactly the kind of show we want to bring our Prime members around the world,” said Amazon worldwide television acquisition vice-president Brad Beale.

The show joins Amazon’s growing list of exclusive shows in the UK, many of which have been acquired from US cable networks, including Mr Robot, which originally aired on the USA Network and returns for a second series later this year, and Outlander, which was first shown on Starz.
