Tonight, Preacher will return to AMC for its second season, and the show will be something comic diehards want to check up on. Following its first season, Preacher is making a more comic-centric comeback this time around, and Dominic Cooper stresses the show’s new season is going in a totally different direction than it was previously.

Speaking to ComicBook, the star of Preacher promised fans that series will more closely follow its comic origins in season two.

“It’s going in a very different direction,” Cooper revealed.

“I think they were very clever to lay the foundations of who these people were and the world in which they existed and inhabited before. We know now it could be as crazed and manic and as ludicrous as the comics are. Now with the introduction of these larger-than-life, peculiar characters from the comic, they can go as far as they’d like. I think that not holding back and that carefree idea of a storyline going anywhere is what makes this particular season so exhilarating.”

Dominic Cooper (‘Preacher’) previews ‘exciting’ 2nd season with Gold Derby’s Riley Chow: Jesse’s ‘torment and pain consume him.’ Adapted from the 75-issue comic of the same name published from 1995 to 2000, the supernatural drama follows Jesse Custer, a small-town criminal and preacher played by Cooper. “He’s strong, he’s decisive, he’s trustworthy, but his torment and his pain consume him to point that he becomes quite selfish and he makes some terrible mistakes,” Cooper says about his character.

A Preacher With A Difference

Preacher is back on AMC this weekend and over at amc.com, here’s the man who plays Jesse Custer himself, Dominic Cooper in the show on what we should be seeing in its second season. Warning: a few spoilers ahead

Q: What’s it been like shooting in New Orleans? Have the new locations affected your approach to your character and the story?

A: It feels like a different show, which I love. The guys have been so good at making sure the show continues to feel very fresh in this idealized context. New Orleans has a very specific undercurrent with history, and the people are very distinctive here. There’s a culture that really matches the feeling of the show. It couldn’t be a more perfect place for us – a bunch of lunatics – to end up.

Q: How would you describe Jesse’s journey this season?

A: I think he’s beginning to really take control of this power, and he has this internal dialogue and conflict with regards to whether he can harness it and do right with it. The challenge is: Is he capable of that? Whatever and whoever this power belongs to — does that person or entity want him to be in charge of it? He’s really going to have to question and look inward because it obviously has an incredible impact on people and a huge influence on changing the present and the future. He thinks he’s up for it, but then he begins to question it. It’s going to be fun to see how he navigates his way through that.
