The actor stole the script for the show in order to read for the starring role

Before he played a preacher with unconventional powers in the Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg TV series Preacher, based on the comic, Dominic Cooper starred in the hit History Boys with the National Theater, turned to musicals in the film adaptation of Mamma Mia! and even played a Saddam Hussein lookalike’s sadistic son in The Devil’s Double. Yet the actor told TIME at San Diego Comic-Con on that Preacher is one of the hardest thing he’s ever done.

Is this your first Comic-Con?

I came some years ago for the first Captain America. You’re always amazed by the effort and devotion that fans put into events. When I first came I found it just hilarious seeing Superman vomiting on street corners and Wonder Woman helping him as he’s vomiting in a gutter. It really lets you see superheroes in a different light.

Was your theater training helpful in any surprising way on Preacher, a show where you have these superpowers and one of the other characters literally has a butthole for a face?

San Diego Comic-Con is home to a lot of ‘firsts.’ This year was no exception, as Preacher took to the stage at Hall H and treated the audience to a live table read of the penultimate episode.

With the end of Preacher’s first season looming on the horizon, there was little doubt that we were going to get a taste of what was coming next for the inhabitants of Annville. But whilst most of the fans in the audience might have been anticipating a couple of clips, or a trailer of some description for both the finale and penultimate episode, what the cast and crew brought to the panel instead was something far more special and unique. A live table read.

Of course, without the full complement of cast available to lend their voices to all the roles needed for an entire episode, some “friends” were enlisted to help things along…

If you’re a fan of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg’s oeuvre then you already know how the comedic duo views religion. This Is The End, their directorial debut, proudly carried an atheistic banner but managed to be sensitive to, and understanding of, theists and the idea of faith all while a New Testament apocalypse lays waste to earth. Their new animated feature Sausage Party takes a slightly darker, more nihilistic approach as it explores the absurdity of finite existence and the illusion of a promised afterlife. And Preacher, the runaway cable hit they executive produce for AMC, which follows a Texas preacher who, once possessed by a supernatural entity whose power is capable of all-good and all-evil, wrestles with his already murky moral compass and a God who has abandoned mankind. Clearly, there’s a through-line in Rogen and Goldberg’s work where the very fabric of faith needs to be interrogated.

At Comic-Con this weekend, some of the cast of Preacher — Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga, Joseph Gilgun — spoke to the show’s deft ability to strike a delicate balance between criticizing and commending faith.

“Raising the questions rather than having unwavering opinions on religion is the show’s key, and that’s why it’s been so incredibly well received from [the religious] world,” Cooper, who plays the titular preacher Jessie Custer, said. “No one’s seemed to have trouble with it, to our surprise. So raising these questions in this incredibly tough time we are currently living through in the world… it’s chaos that we are living through. So people are questioning their faith and just what on earth is going on in the world.”
